I like hip-hop/rap music. Especially the ones with a good solid beat. I admit most do use pretty vulgar language, which normally I wouldn't tolerate, but I listen to the music for the sound, not the lyrics. My friend is a break dancer and we love to dance to things like Lil Mama and Missy Elliot. Their stuff is pretty clean and still has a solid beat to dance to.

I hope I dont get blasted for this. I'm african american and I don't listen to rap music. It's to vulgar, and nasty. Titties and biddies and booty and B, H, f'er, M F'er and more that's what most are about. The real sad thing it that our younger generation look up to these rapper who some of them ain't nothing but overpaid criminals yeah I said it because it's true. I've listen to some of these hiphop artist c'mon people some of it is just a hott ghetto mess. Most you can't understand them and women come on some of the video hoochies they expolit themselves for what the all mighty $$$$ Bill!!! But this is what people like to see because violents, and sex sells and thats just being real.

truth be told, ALOT of hiphop and rap seems like bloody noise to me and seems to be promoting the wrong image to the audience

I mean when did it become cool to become a criminal?

HOWEVER

on the flip side of it, there is some really good rap and hiphope that stll has that angle of fun and some still have that political edge in the lyrics that can rouse people to action.

Well, I don't think that most of the popular rap music today is very positive or even very good. But then it is the "Entertainment" industry, so I guess that I should not feel slighted when I like the beat but feel somewhat disgusted when I actually listen to the words and the "message". "Real talent" and "substance" is not what the industry is about. I have resigned myself to the fact that most of what we hear on the radio and see on MTV was created to make money and that is all. I would even go as far as to say that we are subject to the images and messages that the producers, record companies and the other powers-that-be want us to be exposed to. Unfortunately, most of the images and messages are negative. They tell us that if you are a female, you must wear skimply clothing, be very slim and that your existence is to be a man's arm piece or his sectsual fantasy. If you are a young male, then you must be very angry, disrespectful of authority and violent. I just hope that most of us are savvy enough to know that it is just hype. I hope that most of us realize that all of the big rappers live so far away from the neighborhoods that they rap about that they need Mapquest to remember how to drive there.

i like some rap music if the lyrics mean something and it has a good beat. i have a 27 year old son and he loves rap. good lord. i believe rap is dangerous sometimes because after listening to rap some young people act like they live that type of life the music most gangsta lyrics dipict and they become hard because of it. i also feel most of rap is demeaning to women and i don't understand why it's o.k to them (women)to be called those horrible names and ok for them to gyrate vulgarly on stage and/or videos. it's a shame, but that's just me. like i said if it has a beat, good lyrics and is fun to listen to, my ears are opened

I listen to Hip Hop Music and I believe that its a matter of taste and your own personal values. Some of it is rude and offensive, but not all of it.
As with the different genres of writing you have to listen to and use what makes you comfortable. Support the Artists that make music close to your own values and leave the rest alone.

i'm definetly into rap music as in ALL music there's the crap and the worth listen too...it's up to you to change the dial...not all rap is about hoes and b*tches, those are the ones getting the most airplay since the current trend being sold is "thug" lifestyle...i'm not going to lie ...i listen to all but the ones with the explicit lyrics, I make damn sure my young nephews are not exposed to it when i'm around.

It's not the sort of thing you'd play if you had your old Mum in the car with you.

But there is always that two version thing that's been going on like with Eminems Purple hills.

I have purple pills when i'm in the car on my own and purple hills when I take my old Mum shopping.

I tend to go more for the beat than I do what's being said. I quite like Cypress Hill because of the beat and have even bought Spanish versions proving that the language doesn't mean much.

However really good rappers have a lot to say, in a poetic way, and it wouldn't come across right or it could even sound gay, if they didn't use the language that they use each day.

real hip hop is dope, but unfortunatley like my man said, you are forced to go underground to find it. When corporations saw potential in the hip hop scene as a "niche market" they started exploiting it, and only showcasing elements that were marketable and profitable. Unfortunately, they feel that the whole "bling bling" thing as well as the thug image is the most appealing to young audiances so that is all you will ever see or hear on mainstream media. But I am very proud of all the underground cats out there that are doing things indipendently, and just making all those toys on MTV look like the wack fakers that they are. If you want to hear some real hip hop, check out the cats on the Quannum label like Blackalicous (Gift of Gab, Chief Xcel), Lyrics Born, Latyrx (Lateef the Truthspeaker, Lyrics Born), Lifesavas, Pigeon John, or all the cats that are holding it down in LA like Haiku de Tat (Abstract Rude, Mika 9, Aceyalone) or Busdriver or Jurassic 5. All those cats know whats up. Its like what Dj Kool Herc said " Its not about keeping it real, it's got to be about keeping it right!"

peace

Hate it! Hate it! Hate it!

It is disrespectful and derogatory to everyone. mostly women though. The only words you can even understand as it is blaring from some homies car are words you can't print here. My only experience with it is frome where i use to live. It was horrible violent musice blared from violent people.
I know this isn't popular but my opinion is based on my experience.

rap form the 80's was great but today it is just filth. again my opinion.
