OK, I am no chef-ette by FAR! LOL, So I finally looked into cooking classes, I figured if I learn how to cook with fresh foods I can take better care of my diet...WRONG!

Here is the Menu for the first class:
BBQ Baby-back ribs
BBQ chicken
HomeMade Mac & Cheese
5 Layered Salad
Peach & Pear Cobbler...

Do not get me wrong, I was on cloud 9 and ate more than I should have, BUT the chef used a total of 6 eggs, 3 bars of butter, flour, sugar (3 kinds of sugar), 2 bags of cheese, and the list goes on and this was before she even made the desert!?!?

LOL! I'm So very full right now...I think I gained 5 pounds!?

Wait just a minute ! I got several questions. first off, Home made mac and cheese is easy to make, why take a class ?
secondly, isn't seven layer salad better than five ?
thirdly, I've been to Texas, they got more BBQ shacks than Carter has pills, so why learn to make it ?
and lastly, Peach and Pear Cobbler ? will you make me Supper ?

Hi All!

I'll through my two cents in as well. I don't know what is being taught in the schools (I'm also in Canada), and I may be dating myself, but when I went to school, we had home-echonomics. We learned to cook in grades 6-8, plus it was offered in highschool. Now this is another story. lol

Up here in Toronto, the local college that is known for it's culinary classes, has a part time cooking classes in different types of styles. I'm personnally looking at the 2 day workshop they have on Glycemic Index cooking.

Some people feel that they cannot cook, others can. If you find a flare for it, go for it and have fun. Another possiblity for ideas on cooking would be to watch the Food network. The have recipies posted if you see something you like and want to try it.

I agree with Isalandgal that Cooking is part science, part art and part imagination. example If one was to take beef , garlic and onions, peppers. you take those few items need to fix a dish. you could have three people with the exact starting ingrediants yet each will be slightly differnt in appearance, tasture, smell, and taste. It could be simple things like did they try to brown the meat before the pan and oil was hot ? Was the onions chopped fine or in large chunks? Did they add the garlic first or after the onions were sweated down? or did the use cayanne pepper or did the use papricca? or did the use a Chilpolte , ancho or habanaro chilie pepper ?

texasgurl as a former soda junkie , yes it. I said soda junkie At the worst I was drinking at least two 2 liters bottles two a day for the standard brands and with the store brands sometimes two 3-liter botttles a day. If I was not drinking soda I was drinking Sweet sugary tea with a layer or haze of sugar in the glass. Again I usallly drank at least a gallon a day.The best thing I have found to wean ones self from them is to switch to a diet drink like Crystal light, and avoid sugar. I mayself use the Kroger brand generic equivalent.A nother thing to avoid is processed sugar watch out for fruit juices as the contain a lot of calories fro the natural sugars in them. before I had my lapband I lost close to 25 pounds in about 4 months by just cutting out the sodas and the sweets.

If you really want to learn to cook without adding the weight... stay away from American, British and French cuisine... lol

Most asian cuisine are very healthy and flavorfull. Go for vietnamese, chinese (not the amecian chinese, real one) japanese...

Also meditteranean cuisine is a better choice, more veggies, olive oil instead of butter and lean meat, lots of lambs and chicken.

I mean if I was to cook everything on the menu you wrote there, in the same week, I'd need a new wardrobe within a few months. I'll choose clothes over food any day... hehehehehe

You know what my main problem is...coke!!! Im addicted...I need to switch to diet soda.

Since you bio page lists you as being Houston ,Texas. You may want to look at Houston pbs channels 8.1 and 8.2. "Mexico one Plate at a Time", "Primal Grilling" and "BBQ University" Nick Stellinio's show as well "Yan can Cook" as Americas Test Kitchens are good shows to get Ideas from. Most of the cooking shows are on 8.2 on the week days. Channel 11.2 also has a few shows that are good.

Thanks, I will look into it.

Lol Texasgurl, sounds fun!

Cooking is part science, part art and part imagination! Don't worry too much about the fats and sugars the chefs use, concentrate on the techniques and you'll learn how to adapt some of the recipes to use less calorie laden ingredients! (Healthier oils, and low fat yoghurts, creme fraiche, soft cheese etc)

And for the irresistable recipes that are full of butter/cream/sugar, invite friends over to share them and add lots of fresh salads or veggies to fill you up so you don't eat as much of them!

A little of what you fancy does you good!!

I bought a cook book today! WOOT! My first and probably last cook book :) Im just so tired on eating out all the time...I guess Im getting bored with fast food, WOW is that possible!? LOL

If you are not proficient in cooking a class will help.If you are learning the basic steps on how to cook like knife work, how to do basic sauces and cooking stlyes. from those basics there one can take those basics and modify, reduce the bad things by subistuting healthier things. Example like meat loaf depending on what type of meat and what type bread crumbs you use that can have dramatic effect on how the calories, and fat stack up. there are quite a few shows who hosts take reduced calorie cooking to new and tasty heights. so there are option out there to help one lose weight.
