Is cutting bases back a mistake? 90 Views 12/23/07
Is it just me, but does anyone else feel American generals in the past and politicians now are making a mistake in wanting to cut back on the number of military bases and personnel that are stationed overseas? Wasn't America safer and able to influence the actions of foriegn leaders when America had bases, large and small, around the world? I won't go into Bush's decisions regarding Iraq, and four-month Air Force deployments or 15-month Army deployments. But do military families really suffer living two to four years overseas? My parents lived at Mannheim and Stuttgart, Germany, from 1965 to 1967, and then we went back to Germany in 1976, this time to Kaiserslautern. Our parents knew when they joined the Army or Air Force that that could be stationed at remote locations. I know I've always had more interest in world affairs than other people I've known. Trips to London, Paris and Amsterdam before coming back to the States weren't bad too. I can see changing some of the treaties affecting the status of our forces, for example, to require the host governments like Germany, England, etc., to pay for the base guards, mess halls, utility bills, other support staff and other needs, since military families spend money off base and support the local economy. But I sure would like to remind some of these isolationist politicians that as President Teddy Roosevelt, I believe, said, the best defense policy is to carry a Big Stick. Sometimes you hear these presidential candidates talk about cutting back forces and you just want to tell them how dangerous that could be! It's enough to wish we had a strong third party in politics. None of the candidates in either party really sparks a big interest for me. They all have silly stances on various issues, such as the Democrats' various plans for taxpayer supported health insurance for poor people who won't be able to afford insurance co-pays and just need more state- and county-run free clinics at Health Department offices. Or silly stances on amnesty for economic criminals, aka illegal aliens. It's like picking the lesser of two evils. Anyway, is it me or anyone else ever feel the same way? Where are the business and political leaders when we need them? If you agree, write this fine newspaper. Or pass the word on to any movers and shakers you know.

Activity suggestions wanted 59 Views 12/02/07
Ok, everyone knows as we age and people grow up, interests change.. What activities or hobbies would you suggest fora DWM, 46, bhm, who works 50-60 hours a week and is tired after work? I'm in a dating slump, so what do you do after checking email, reading the paper and watching TV? Looking for suggestions for a single would-be dirty old man to get into.

Current events survey 97 Views 04/15/07
Hello, This is a USA current events survey. Yes, it's a little off topic. Contribute if you want. Ignore if not please. 1. Gas in Central Arkansas is around $2.75. What is your price? 2. what's the reason for the price increase? 3. Should the US just get the heck out of dodge in Iraq? 4. Isn't time for Iraq to be divided into 3 countries: Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis? 5. Do you give a hoot about the political fussing over the replacing of federal prosecutors by Attorney General Gonzales or is this just another stupid beltway fuss? 6. Who do you think are the leading candidates for president on both parties? Who are the least likely longshots.? 7. Do poor need tax cuts or would they be better served with more services such as housing aide, allowing people to borrow money from the government via authorization of an interception of next year's income tax refund, etc? 8. Should child support be tax free for the payor and taxable for the recipient? 9. What's the best way to run school districts and fund them? State taxes? Local taxes only? both? Local control? State controls? 10. Shouldn't business developers, ie shopping centers and new subdivisions, be required to pay to widen roads in front of their centers and subdivisions so traffic doesn't back up just because they want to bring in new business? 11. Was IMUS screwed out of a job for his stupid comments that are just an example of a old white guy trying to be funny using the Hip Rap-Hip Hop Language? Don't these Rap songs refer to women and things in far worse ways? Are Sharpton and Jessie Jackson really qualified to be a moral spokesman? Didn't they both get caught using racial or other slurs... ie Sharpton referring to New York as Hymmie Town in the 80s or 90s? Again, answer here or break part and post comments

Would you have surgery? 274 Views 03/31/07
Would you have Lapband or gastrobypass surgery if your insurance or someone paid for it? As a DWM, 46, bhm, with health problems from my weight, my answer will always be: HELL yes, but job won't cover it. I might get down from Super-BhM, down to just fat. That would be better than nothing :(
